Building Number Sense & a Giveaway

Something that we work on in first grade is number sense. We need to know what numbers are, how to build numbers, how to break apart numbers, how to spell numbers, different representations of numbers, and well...the whole shabang.

First Grade Can Be a Circus

The other day I posted about our first grade circus. Well, I finished my math centers!!! I think they're adorable and will definitely give the kiddos something to do while our schedule is rearranged during practice.

Marching into Math

I'm still adjusting to my Mac...and yes so far all of the Mac enthusiasts that commented have been right! I really really like it. I'm figuring our shortcuts and things are coming naturally to me.

This Friday marks March 1st and my firsties are showing such growth. I finished my middle of the year math and reading assessments and I saw such growth.

I am trying some new things this year (Daily 5...though I really only do Daily 3 or 4) and I'm doing more engaging centers. Not just buying them from a company that thinks they know where my kiddos should be.

Anywho. Based on what my kids enjoy doing during center time, what we've learned, where we're going, and what they need to work on I created these 8 March Math Centers. Presenting: "Marching into Math"

I'm now happy to present one of the first items I created using my Mac. (Hmm...I don't think I like calling it a Mac or Macbook...I think she needs a name...)

You'll get 8 Math Centers geared toward first graders

1. Number Bonds
Students will write the missing part or missing whole of each equation. Students will have to use missing addend and missing whole properties.
(with recording sheet)

2. Number Patterns
Stack the ice cream scoops to complete a number pattern
(with follow-up worksheet)

3.Sorting true and false addition and subtraction number sentences
(with follow-up worksheet)

4. Concentration--Matching Game
Match the addition and subtraction problems to their answers
(May be played individually or with a partner)
(with number bond recording sheet)

5.Fact Families
Given three numbers the students need to generate the four members of a fact family

6. Money
Matching the coins to their total value
(with assessment worksheet)

7. 10s Frames
Count the total number of items in the tens frames and match them with their number representation

8. Roll and Cover
3 roll and cover pages that require 3 dice

I just found a program (for Macs) to get music from old ipods...I thought 200+ songs were stuck on my old Nano!!

Loving--My New Macbook!!
I made the plunge last Saturday. Best Buy was having a sale and I've been saving...and I needed one. It took me mere minutes to create my Currently this time and in the past I'd probably still be waiting to load something. Traditionally I was a PC person so I'm experiencing a learning curve but so far so good.

Thinking--Brrr!
I'm in Indiana. We had a 2hr delay today. You're probably thinking "Oh they must've gotten snow." Nope...this is our second 2hr delay for low temps. Oh my goodness! I also live in an apt and walked to the leasing office this afternoon. Bad idea. I thought my legs were going to snap off. I actually thought to myself "If I were Rose (from Titanic) I would've bogarted the floating furniture, too."

Wanting--To be Beachfront
Enough said.

Needing--I have been so bad at keeping on top of my Math Journals. I'm way ahead in our actual math text than I am on creating these. So, if I get it finished before Sunday I'm going to do something special *Stay Tuned!*

Pet Peeves--Lying
This really encompasses a lot for me. (In the classroom and life)
Don't lie to me...especially over stupid things. When I find out things will be far worse off.
Don't cheat. I saw you looking at their paper and you're telling me you didn't copy?! Cheating is dishonesty. (I have a few "Cheater Pants" this year...can you tell?)


Here are a few February things I do have finished:

Number Bonds of Love

Where did January go? In a matter of days I'll be awaiting Farley's Currently...that means it'll be February!!! Oh my word. Well, this month has kinda flown by and I totally spaced getting together my February/Valentine centers...so I cheated. Okay okay...I didn't cheat I stimulated the economy by purchasing centers from The Queen of the First Grade Jungle . I printed them today and laminated them  and I'll be sending them home with some kiddos who have darling parents that volunteer to help with cutting, gluing, laminating, and other horrible jobs only a saint would volunteer to do.

I think I'll like them :) Well, there was one more thing I wanted to add to them. My kiddos did a great job with numbers bonds in my Snowy Day Centers but I wanted more practice with numbers to 20. 

Here is what I came up with tonight and I wanted share the number bond love!

Gearing Up to Go Back

I know...I know...I said it. I don't go back until the 7th but I need to go in and have a little 'work day' for myself. I have plans, copies, rearranging desks, taking down decorations, and gr...grr...grading. (eek)

I'll need some new centers and word work activities for my kiddos when they return. Can't keep doing stuff with Santa and elves on them!

Here's what I finished up from the comfort of my couch in a chihuahua sandwich.

Oh, and yes some are common core aligned but as you all know there are tons of things we need to teach that are not standards.

*Insert witty title here...I'm too tired*

I've been in school for 13 days and I am so flippin' tired. I really thought about just posting a bunch of pictures and asking you to picture read them ;)

I didn't do the link up with pictures from my room because there is still so much I'd like to do. Especially after looking at all of those awesome photos. This was my welcoming bulletin board. I thought it was cute and funny if you get the reference. The tweet birds are from Digital Bakeshop and came in so many cool colors.

I need to preface this with saying I know I am not an artist but I love me some stick figures, lol. We took our first test in first grade this week (a math test for chapter 1) and I wanted to go over my expectations of a good test taker. Testing Timothy was born. We talked about good behaviors and choices we saw and now have an anchor chart to refer to.

Chapter 2 in math is Number Bonds. We learn about two numbers making a larger number. I had the kiddos make number bonds out of colored paper and I broke out the unifix cubes. This year I had magnetic ones for me to use to model composing and decomposing numbers. #PartPartWhole

"Show me two numbers that make a 7."
And when I'd call on the kids they were really using math language. I head "3 and 4 make 7." "1 plus  6 is 7."

A good kinesthetic activity.

Okay, that's all for now. I'm going to finish watching my DVR'ed Big Brother (what a stinkin' flip in the game!!)
