Full on Fall

Okay, fall is in full swing in my classroom. I've officially turned the air off, I'm giving jacket reminders, conferences are this week, fall break at the end of the week, and we are changing up our bulletin boards.

We had Johnny Appleseed on the brain. I got some apples and we did apple stamping,
Pinterest gave me the idea to use a corn on the cob holder for stamping
and we put together our Johnny Appleseed writing craftivities from Primary Possibilities
sorry, this poor Johnny on the bottom left cracks me up.
Then to transition we made some really cute scarecrows (from All Students Can Shine)
Which one of these is not like the others?

Nope, not exactly supposed to look like this but this is what one of my darlings did.
Then we we made those pumpkin tissue paper window decorations I made last year. (It went soooo much better this year so I think I learned a thing or two...

I still didn't do contact paper. We just went slower and I had them cut the templates out in small groups with me.  We also cut our squares out together step-by-step (took longer but so much handier than some kids ending up with tiny squares)
Then we did the edges and filled the inside together.

I know this is getting long but I also want to share our fire station trip! Each year we walk down to the fire station (it's about 5 minutes down the road). The firemen do some fire safety lessons and we get to look at the fire trucks.

Playing Catch Up

Really...the last week of October...really?! My birthday is gone...the nice weather is hit or miss. I got my car washed at the fancy car wash (which to me is any car wash where I don't drive it through) and it poured. The leaves changed colors..and fell off. Well, at least there's Halloween to look forward too. I really do like Halloween. I like seeing the kids get so hyped. I don't like the sugar high and then the sugar low that follows but it comes with the territory. (Hmmm, maybe if they sneak candy to school I can take it and have a 3:00 pick-me-up?)

Super busy week this week in Reading. I'm not sure who exactly those people are in the front of my teacher's manuals that write these books but wowza. This week my firsties learned -s, -ed, -ing, possessives, predictions, reviewed short i, and learned naming parts of a sentence. Now, I can teach all of those things. Really, I can, I promise, I've done it. I'm just overwhelmed by doing it in one week. I know, I know...they won't master it this week...we'll review..and review..and recall...but I just kinda want to wave a magic teacher wand and have them absorb it all now. Too much to ask?

We learned that 'apostrophe s' shows ownership. Who doesn't love hearing 6 year olds say apostrophe?
Inside the " 's " I wrote "mine mine mine mine" because it's greedy.
Then we all though of something we owned and wrote it on a post-it and drew a picture. "Miss Cosby's dog" I made them "prove" they owned it by showing me the apostrophe s before they could hang it
We learned naming part this week (telling part is next week). Luckily this is something I've touched on during Mountain Language so we had something to build off. Laying in bed thinking about the best way to teach naming part I kinda thought of a train. (love my drawing, dontcha) Next week we'll do telling part and I'll come back to it.
Organizing our books from our book boxes. We're going 'book shopping' on Monday!
I am LOV-ING the mash-up of Weekly Reader and Scholastic News. First of all the paper isn't that shiny hard to write on crap stuff. The vocabulary and syntax are way more appropriate now. (I so wish my college TAs read this...totally used 'syntax' ...)
I had to share this cutie. The student working on this "Bat-o-Lantern" had to finish it up at home. C is such a creative kiddo and decided to go out of the pumpkin patch on this one. Too cute.

Okay, I've totally been wordy-worderson in this post but I've been away from here so long I had so much to share!

Hocus Pocus Focus!

My fall break is over... <sadface> I had conferences last week and I'll say I believe they went well. I was sick though :( For most of fall break I had a horrible sinus infection. Blech. Anywho I feel better now and it's back to the first grade grind. This is a super busy week with our reading series. It's beginning to introduce a lot of language arts. More about that later.

A few years ago I saw some clearance staples and I snagged them. Turns out they were colored. I got orange and green. The kiddos loved them. However, I'm running out... I decided to Sharpie my silver staples and see what happened. It worked!!!

Don't you love getting stuff in the mail!!! Even if you buy it it's a treat when it makes it to your door. I signed up for Birchbox. So, every month I'll get a box full of nice-brand health and beauty samples. It's only $10 and that includes shipping! You can go month-by-month or sign up for a designated length of time. I think I'm going to add a 3-month subscription as a gift for a friend. What a fun birthday or Christmas gift. :)

Oh and some more classroomy stuff to add. Here's a cute little rhyme to use during a test. I'm going to use it on our practice spelling test. Click the images to download.

I've been Boo'ed!

This week is fall break. F-I-N-A-LL-Y! lol Actually I have Parent-Teacher conferences Monday and Tuesday evening and then a half day Wednesday. That leaves Thursday and Friday all to me. :) Report cards will be done, planning will be done, (hopefully), and alarms do not have to be set! Score!

Yesterday I got Boo'ed by First Grade and Fearless . Such a cute idea.

Here is a new freebie for you! My firsties are still practicing subtraction and what a fun way to practice this skill!
You can check out my other Halloween ideas here:

This is one of my favorite Halloween books! (It even came with stickers)
I really want to paint a pumpkin!!

I made these Jack-O-Lantern 'suncatchers' with the kiddos. They look so cook when the sun is streaming in through the window.

And this week I'll be using this craftivity, from a Cupcake for the Teacher, to go along with my bat unit. (Click the image to check it out)

Updated Halloween Math Centers

A few weeks ago I posted about my Halloween Math Centers. My kiddos are really liking playing concentration with the witches and their brooms. I gave them cubes to use with the odd & even center and they're getting the gist.

This week in math we were learning about fact families so I decided to add some fact family practice to my packet.
Hang the bats from the trees. (There are other trees and other bats)
I also added some number word practice. My kiddos are really good at most of their number words but could work on the teens.

If you're interested check 'em out here

I'm going to try this Google Drive thing again so let's try this subtraction freebie:
