Halloween Math Centers (and a freebie)

September is fun. The weather cools down a bit, cool colors appear in nature, and Johnny Appleseed units are fun...but really it's just a stepping stone to October for me. I love the seasonal and spooky ideas and decorations. I've created some math centers to use during October for my groups.

I really wish I could share some pictures of the finished products but we're waiting on laminating film at my school...so that's put up a road block for me. I think I see a personal laminator in my future. (I just needed an excuse people, they're nifty!)

  • Practice time to the hour and half hour
  • Doubles addition facts
  • Number sequencing
  • Dice addition
  • Odd and Evens
  • Most of the centers come with a follow-up worksheet that can be used to assess mastery or used as an independent assignment.

Oh and here's a freebie with a Halloween theme:

My Class is a Hoot!

Seriously, my class is incredibly funny. I really enjoy them. As much as I'm counting the days until break <cough> 14 <cough> it'll be hard saying goodbye.

Anywho.

I was walking my class to lunch and D pulls up his shorts nearly to his chest. When I see him I ask what he's doing. He then tells me in a chipper voice "I'm Steve Urkel." The reference fits but I just had to dig deeper, lol.

Me:Do you even know who that is?
D: No, I saw my cousin doing it.
Me: So, you don't know who it is...
D: He was a president I think...
Me: <in my head> Oh my.

I promise we talked about the presidents and I promise that I never mentioned Steve Urkel (or even Stefan Urkel for those of you in the know)

Second grade is going to have an interesting year next year.

AR Testing

My school utilizes the AR computer reading program. A kiddo of mine logged on, found his book, and began his test. A few minutes later he walked up to me with a confused look on his face.

J: Miss Cosby my test has apostrophes on every word.
Me: Apostrophes? (I totally think he's confused and misusing the word apostrophe)
J: Yeah
Me: Okay, I'll come look at it.
--We both go to the computer--
Me: Smiling and chuckling. It's in Spanish J. You chose the Spanish version.
J: Smiles
Me: I read the question Spanish to him.
J: I don't know Spanish *smiling*
Me: I know. Be more careful.

lol, that kid cracks me up every day

Dipthongs!

We're down to 24 days left in my district. Shame they're the craziest 24 days of the year! So much to do. So much I want to teach before they become second graders. So many fun things I want to fit in. So much cleaning will need to be done. Sigh. Ah well, we'll get through it.

This week we're practicing dipthongs. In what other profession do you get to say that?! Our spelling pattern this week is oy and oi. We've done vowel games before and one of the quick and easies was "Four in a Row". I feel this gives them reading practice with the spelling pattern without only using those 10 words and they have fun. You always have to sneak in the learning. (Muahhaha lol)

Click on the game board to download.

You'll need to make dice (or a spinner or alternate rules). I got the idea to create the dice after seeing another oy oi game on Pinterest. I was originally making the dice to play that game and then I decided to do a Four in a Row. Here are the dice I made. (I made one die for each group)

#YouMightBeAFirstGrader if during calendar you do the math to figure out how many days are left and you yell out "I wish there were 200 days of school!"
